As we mark the tenth anniversary of Pope Francis’s landmark encyclical Laudato Si’, this lecture will explore the past, present, and future of integral ecology within the Church’s tradition.
While Pope Francis’s encyclical has drawn considerable attention, the Catholic vision of creation care did not begin in 2015. From Pope St. Paul VI’s warnings of an impending ecological crisis to Pope St. John Paul II’s call for “ecological conversion” and Pope Benedict XVI’s insistence on an integrated vision that unites care for creation with respect for human dignity, the Church has long offered a unique perspective on creation that transcends what is on offer in the field of mainstream secular environmentalism. Laudato Si’ invites us to embrace creation as God’s gift, neither exploiting it as mere resource nor idolizing it as a false god. The lecture will explore how the Church’s ecological vision—rooted in Scripture, the wisdom of the saints, and the teachings of the Magisterium—offers an alternative to the ideological extremes that dominate contemporary discourse. Rather than viewing care for creation as peripheral to the life of faith, we will consider how the practice of integral ecology forms an essential dimension of our call to holiness, challenging us to embrace the cosmic covenant in which every creature finds its place within the order of divine love.
Alumni Speaker:
Matthew Ramage, Ph.D.
Director of Center for Integral Ecology · Benedictine College
Class of 2009 · Ph.D. in Theology
Dr. Matthew Ramage is Professor of Theology at Benedictine College where he is co-director of its Center for Integral Ecology. His research and writing concentrates especially on the theology of Joseph Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI, the wedding of ancient and modern methods of biblical interpretation, the dialogue between faith and science, and stewardship of creation. In addition to his other scholarly and outreach endeavors, Dr. Ramage is author, co-author, or translator of over fifteen books.

As we mark the one the one-year anniversary of our launch of our Agriculture and Catholic Environmental Stewardship (ACES) minor, this lecture will explore an important yet often unexamined dimension of the Church’s teaching on care for creation: the scriptural and traditional vision of man as the priest of creation.
While modern life often distances us from the rhythms of creation, the priestly vocation of sanctifying everyday life in the garden of God’s good earth is central to our vocation as bearers of the divine image. This lecture will explore how practices like farming, gardening, fishing, and hunting serve as a lived catechesis, forming us in virtue as we attune ourselves to the divine order embedded in creation. Discussing how to align our lives with the paschal rhythms and logic of the cosmos, we will discuss how to find holiness by immersing ourselves in the concrete, particular places God has entrusted to us. By embracing creation as a gift rather than a mere resource, we will learn how to rediscover our role as priestly stewards of creation, offering the work of our hands as a sacrifice of praise in union with Jesus Christ.
